Dined here on Thursday September 2, 2010 and it was outstanding.

The menu had sufficient variety, prices were not outrageous and the food was excellent. Everything we ate was seasoned to perfection, indicating a bona fide Chef was in the kitchen. Salsa was nice and spicy and the $8 chili con queso was like no other and worth every penny!

Service was top shelf, and we did wait maybe 30 minutes for our food to come, but it was prepared fresh to order and was very hot. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is tired of bland, boring, under spiced, corporate prepared-ahead Mexican Food.

Hey Buddy Hillhouse:

I grew up in OKC and as a little boy loved the fried chicken at Chicken in the Rough. I was wondering if you can send me the recipe for the chicken. I'm in Florida and they sure don't have a clue for fried chicken. GO Sooners

This is the BEST chicken. I went at 9 p.m. this evening. The chicken was smokey, tender, juicy and crunchy. The fries were thick and delicious. The fried bread with the honey on top is part of the meal, but feels like a dessert.
I think some people are exaggerating of the potential threat of going here. I wish I would have went earlier instead of thinking of how "dangerous" it would be. This neighborhood is like any inner city neighbor hood in a big city, but it is in OKLAHOMA. This is not , New York, DC, Detroit, or LA. Please support a local businessman and do not discriminate based on the physical location. The chicken is wonderful in every possible way. Don't go at 2 a.m. if you don't want to be around the after club crowd. They open at 6 p.m. on Fri and Sat.

Re: TKILTBAG - Barring your ideas on being a sellout and country music (of which I've got strong opinions, too), your restaurant review is mostly angry about the lack of vegetarian offerings. I get it, and I get the humor. Might as well let someone else pony up some words on their other offerings, too, because you didn't really have anything bad to say about the food - just that it was hard to screw up what you ordered, which isn't a reflection in itself.

Re: Jim -
Jim, you've got some wires crossed. Vegetarians don't eat meat. It's often for a variety of reasons. Some people don't like spending energy resources feeding grain to a cow when just feeding the grain to the less fortunate would do much, much more to cure world hunger. Some people are really dissatisfied with humane standards in the food production world, some of which are absolutely deplorable. Whatever the reason, being a vegetarian mostly requires avoiding meat protein, not animal products that don't involve a dead animal. Dairy's cool, Eggs are fine, y'know, whatever.

Vegans, on the other hand, swear off any and all animal products. They're the more militant variety of vegetarian, to who you're referencing. They won't wear leather (because it's from an animal), they won't eat cheese or eggs (because it's from an animal), etc, ad nauseum.

Furthermore, resorting to ad hominem attacks for a blog post about a guy who didn't like a restaurant based on its ambiance and decor and themes is pretty stupid and wrong-headed. Not liking a restaurant for those reasons is fine, even if the food is really good. If a waiter takes 30 minutes between bringing out drinks and coming to take your order, there's a good chance you're not going back there. The food's great, sure, but you're there forever. Do you see where I'm going with this?

Anyway, for the tl;dr crowd out there, quit being a douche.

File this under "great things take time to mature". I have eaten here dozens times, frequently as part of groups or during interview processes, etc. when on an expense account and the place is chosen for me. At times the food is flawless, but too often the atmosphere is great and the food is mediocre. I have not explored the reasons (perhaps staff variability?) and I must admit it is much improved as compared to a year ago. If you are into tequila they have an above average selection and a few rare bottles as well making this a fun place for drinks and a snack as well. We were disappointed with the "family style" dishes - they didn't seem to be much of a bargain. I would suggest you consider the daily special as it has almost always been above average. Specify exactly how you want your fajitas (I really didn't think it was possible to have them served rare since skirt steak is not very palatable rare...but it arrived pink in the middle more than once) and don't miss the Sopa de Maiz - this is always wonderful. Don't let this scare you away - when they get it right it is great, and perhaps with practice it will always be right. This is certainly a huge quality step above the bland Tex-Mex generally available in town, just don't be shy about asking how the dish is prepared, asking for it to be prepared to your liking, or telling them if it isn't right. They have never failed to be friendly, attentive, and have "taken it back to try again" when asked. The quest for Mexican is not an easy one in OKC. Perhaps the 9.5 was on a very good day, I dont think I have had less than a 6.5 meal there, and I have eaten on 10 days as well. When you are done, don't forget a cupcake for desert from their neighbors if they are still open (SaraSara)

I know the gal you're talking about! Her name is Mai, and she runs the lunch counter. She really likes my partner of 16 years and me, but it a) probably doesn't hurt that I'm pretty conversant with Vietnamese food, b) a real regular and c) know a few words of Vietnamese (i.e., barely enough to be polite).

She makes the best (and I do mean the best) bánh mì (Franco-Vietnamese baguette sandwiches) in town. The main difference between her bánh mì and the "Milk Bottle" bánh mì is that hers don't come with the homemade mayonnaise as a default setting. The ones at the "Milk Bottle" do. If you're vegan, that's important to know. Also, if you ARE vegan, be sure to try the bi chay bánh mì -- it's made with a meat substitute appropriate for vegetarians, vegans, Buddhists, Lenten observers etc.
