Tom’s Barbeque

Wedged between Kansas City and Texas both of which are infamous for their Barbeque lies the Great State of Oklahoma.   Most people who visit the state believe that there is bound to be some good “Q” here.  They are absolutely right!  Kansas City and Texas aren’t isolated barbeque meccas.  This BBQ country from Kansas to Memphis to Texas including everywhere in between and Oklahoma has plenty of it to offer.

This day I went to a childhood favorite of mine, Tom’s barbeque.   This place has been open for at least 40 years and very little has changed since they first opened for business.  As a child, I was privileged to know the owner and his wife, both have now passed, who gave away one of their secrets to making good tasting meat.  Mrs. Gray told me that you have to soak the meat.  Tom’s soaks their meat before smoking in Vinegar, Mustard, Garlic, Paprika, Salt, Pepper and Sugar.

Just a quick word to our loyal OKC Bites readers, I am aware that BJ’s is a chain restaurant but some friends told us we had to give it a try and we are certainly glad we did. This place has been busy ever since it opened in May, which is a good sign. So we choose to go on a Saturday afternoon to avoid the hungry masses.

This is a little hole in the wall diner right off of Macarthur and Britton Road. On the outside this place doesn’t look like a whole lot, but when you walk in you immediately get slapped in the face with an overwhelming sense of comfort. The inside has a quaint down home atmosphere that almost guarantees good cooking. The walls are sporadically adorned with a number of items I would find at my grandmother’s house. There are plenty of old pictures and a wide variety of assorted antique type items. There are two elevated seated areas on each side of the restaurant with a number of booths. The lower center area has plenty of tables that can be moved around to compliment larger parties.

Tarahumara’s Mexican Cantina
702 North Porter Avenue
Norman, OK 73071

For some years, now I have been dining at Tarahumara’s in Norman. Being the Mexican food connoisseur that I am, I can safely say that Efrin and his staff are a step ahead of the other Mexican restaurants in the metro. The restaurant opened up around 2000 across from Norman regional hospital in an old Dairy Queen. Tarahumara’s, also known as Taco La Mucho Juarez to my co-worker, has evolved over the years as well. Patrons can now view their food being prepared on a flat screen T.V. by gloved cook staff with hairnets.

Recently the restaurant expanded to accommodate the crowds. Their attempt to stop the wait failed miserably as more people continue to come. Yes, it’s that good! The part that I didn’t mention is that although there on average are around 25 people waiting to be seated; there is seldom a wait over 10 minutes. Once seated the service is second to none. Dinner 5p-9p Monday - Saturday

I am really kicking my self in the ass for having lived within walking distance of this restaurant for over a year and never trying it. I would drive by every day and give the name a very immature chuckle, but that is as far as it went. In the last couple of months I decided I was going to try the place but my wife always said she wasn’t in the mood for Thai food. Finally I had her talked into it, but when we arrived it was closed (Make sure you note the hours above). I got a bit discouraged and waited a couple of weeks before heading up there again. A couple of weeks were way to long to wait and I can honestly say that I am glad I decided to give it another try.
