Bobo’s Chicken
Usually on 23rd Street between Lottie and MLK ???
Usually open from 7PM – 4AM on Friday and Saturdays

Bobo’s Chicken may be the most infamous eatery in OKC but although everyone seems to have heard of it, very few have actually had it.

For the uninitiated, Bobo’s is a concession trailer that can usually be found parked off 23rd street (see map above) and only opens late at night on Fridays and Saturdays. It is usually easy to spot as they put HUGE flood lights. There are underground rumors that others have seen it during lunch hours and at other locations but I for one have only seen it in this one place as early as 7 PM and as late as 4 AM. If anyone has a sighting please post it here!!

So why have so few people actually eaten from this place? Well, how do I put this delicately… Bobo’s is located in one of the highest crime areas in the city and attracts a sometimes mean looking crowd – depending on when you show up. After 2 AM this place can look like the set of a Tupoc Shakur video shoot. I have actually seen two midget Latino gangsta rappers get out of a low rider with hydraulics (I swear you can’t make this stuff up!!) Although I have never had any problems, I have felt threatened on occasion and have heard stories about shootings and the like. Personally, the air of adventure of going here is kind of fun (until I get jacked).

So why would you travel to one of the worst parts of the city in the middle of the night and brave being mugged, shot, etc.?? Great fried chicken of course!!!
They do a few things here I had never encountered before – first they smoke the chicken before breading and frying it. When you get this stiff in the car it actually smells like barbeque. Next, with every order they include some fried bread (ummm..), French fries with a spicy seasoning sprinkled on and if you want -they pour honey over the top it all. Now the thought of covering fried chicken and French fries with honey seemed wrong to me but as it turns out it is pure genius when it comes to this stuff. They also have catfish baskets (excellent) and shrimp (never tried it) – sans honey here I think.

Prices are good as well you can get a 7 piece wings-n-things chicken basket for 10 bucks and it will easily feed two.
Please post your Bobo’s stories and pics here as everyone I know that has eaten here usually have a good one. In the mean time do as they say and “Follow your nose to Bobo’s”.  Just be sure to watch your ass while you are doing it.

So this is what the chicken looks like? Thanks, I was curious. My goal is to still go out there and get some. Being from L-town should protect me though, so I ain’t scared.

The shrimp is to die for, ask for them to put some smoke on them. You haven’t eaten until you’ve had smoked shrimp. Honestly, it’s not that threatening up there, it may appear that way but for the most part everyone is there just to get food. And I’ve seen every race young and old come thru there. Whenever school is in session, he sets up in Langston from about 2-8 p.m. Just 1 correction, that 7 piece meal is $8

Best chicken ever, couldn’t stop eating them wings…..btw lil mike and funnybone are Native Americans, so the term should be two midget native american gangsta rappers…anyhow everone should eat the 7 piece meal.

  4. Dustin on January 13th, 2008 10:49 am

Good comments - I am rarely near Langston but if I am I will make it a point to ask around for Bobo. I will also try the Shrimp soon - what is adding smoke by the way?

I am also astounded by our readers breadth of knowledge of Native American rappers!! I stand corrected so my apologies to Mike and Funnybone!! Or should I be apolgizing to the latino community.. Man I am in deep here…:)

  6. Justin M. on April 3rd, 2008 1:36 pm

Does anyone have the contact information for this place? A phone number would be nice or even the name of the owner. They have great food and I want to ask them about catering possibilities.

THe best chicken in town! I try to make it at least once every weekend. I’ve also tried their shrimp, its very good also. well today, i saw someone get pulled over and arrested in front of bobo’s stand. there were 3 cop cars there. LOL but other than that, everyone should try bobo’s its very good. and they are open from thursday, friday, saturday, and sunday. sometimes they’re not there on thursdays, thats what one of the guys said. Here are the prices.

    4 piece chicken- $5.99
    7 piece chicken-$ 10.99
    15 piece chicken-$20.99

    7 Piece Shrimp-$6.99
    15 Piece shrimp-$10.99

    2 Piece Catfish-$7.99
    4 Piece Catfish- $10.99

there’s more choices on the catfish but i forgot…

If anyone goes there Speak up because they like to yell, and they can’t hear because they are in their trailer.

Love the chicken, fries, and “fried biscuits”. You just can’t beat the smokey taste. I’ve never had a problem when I go there, but I always go before midnight - before clubs close. I think it is pretty cool to see both Black and Whites there; it’s about the food.

  9. Lisa on May 25th, 2008 7:41 pm

When I went a couple of weeks ago, the 10-pc chicken was $9.99. I am not sure about the other prices.

I was concieved at Bobo’s. My mother told me just yesterday that she was raped by an escaped convict while enjoying her fried chicken. I owe all I am to Bobo’s.

I am probably the whitest guy you will ever meet. I went to BoBo’s at 23rd and MLK twice this past weekend after 1 am. There is no reason to fear of your safety. I was in a suit, much like a detective would wear, suspenders and all, and no one said a word or looked at me funny. It is a very fun environment, and people are simply there to enjoy some late-night bobo’s. Most people are either drunk, stoned, or just love some fried chicken.

As far as the food goes..BoBo’s is easily the best fried chicken, I have ever tasted. It’s almost an orgasmic experience. By no means am I glorifying anything. The mixture of smoke, great batter, and honey drizzle puts the chicken in a league of it’s own.

Bobo’s name was Ozell Pope-Powell. He passed away April 3, 2009 leaving a legacy he could be proud or….your satisfaction. He was buried him today (4/13) and I had the honor of attending his services. The man was truly a legend beyond his infamous chicken. I can say on behalf of his family that your comments and appreciation of just one of the things he enjoyed doing in life is greatly appreciated.

  20. Greg Nelson on May 16th, 2009 4:50 pm

Stopped in there one time on the way home from umpiring-did not want to leave.
I will make it a point to hit it once or twice this summer as well.
    Beau-I’ll meet you out there..

  21. Caleb Messerly on May 17th, 2009 6:42 pm

Stopped by there last Friday (05-15) after a movie with my girlfriend and the lot was empty.
I saw the comment about Ozell dying does that mean this place is done? It would be a shame if this place weren’t around to take new friends and acquaintances to visit.

  22. Ben H on May 18th, 2009 9:09 am

BoBo’s is in full operation! We went there Saturday night 5/16 around 12:30am and the chicken was as amazing as ever.

Bobo’s chicken after closing Edna’s. Yum!
We hit it a little after 3:00 am last week and they were closed already.
Does anybody have their current hours of operation?

  26. ML on August 2nd, 2009 12:18 am

    Excellent food!

However, the 2 out of 4 times I’ve been, it was closed. The drive is too far to warrant going as much as I’d like :(

    Still excellent food though!

I am from dallas and went up to OKC for a wedding recently. Wedding was open bar so we had drinks though out the night and at closing time (2am) my group needed some drunk food. luckily, someone i was with lived in OKC and suggested we make the trip to bobos. Pulling in to the place i was a little hesitant. it is in an area u should be… the guy who suggested it actually told me to stay in the car just as a precaution. Got the 7 piece and once I got back to the hotel i went TO TOWN on this chicken. UNREAL. PHENOMINAL. DELICIOUS. put whatever word you feel necessary for BAD ASS and thats what describes bobos every thing was good! the honey that was dumped over everything… OMG. OKC ppl… if you hvnt tried this place.. GO. its worth getting killed.

  36. Todd on April 23rd, 2010 11:57 am

The wife and I went there last Saturday Night. Got there right a 7 and first in line was Lil Mike and FunnyBone. The chicken was great. I would never have thought to put honey on it, but it was good. But it is extremely messy. That darn honey sticks to everything and liking your fingers won’t get it off.

  37. Jhawk on May 24th, 2010 1:00 pm

“I want Bobo’s….I want chicken….I WANT BOBO’S CHICKEN!!!!” Went there once, and it was the best chicken I’ve ever had. Delicious!!! Does anyone know if Bobo’s is open on Thursday nights too?? If so, where????

  38. TERRANCE on June 17th, 2010 10:08 am

  39. Jay Nice on July 6th, 2010 6:54 pm

I just had some bobo’s this past weekend on Saturday around 11 at night… It is seriously some of the best fried chicken that ive ever tasted…. if you all havent had bobo’s you’ll are missin out

  40. Junique on August 6th, 2010 9:27 pm

This is the BEST chicken. I went at 9 p.m. this evening. The chicken was smokey, tender, juicy and crunchy. The fries were thick and delicious. The fried bread with the honey on top is part of the meal, but feels like a dessert.
I think some people are exaggerating of the potential threat of going here. I wish I would have went earlier instead of thinking of how “dangerous” it would be. This neighborhood is like any inner city neighbor hood in a big city, but it is in OKLAHOMA. This is not , New York, DC, Detroit, or LA. Please support a local businessman and do not discriminate based on the physical location. The chicken is wonderful in every possible way. Don’t go at 2 a.m. if you don’t want to be around the after club crowd. They open at 6 p.m. on Fri and Sat.
